Today is the International Day of Women and Girls in Science 2020. I don’t know much about how Brian Shaw encouraged women in chemistry, but I do know that he was very keen for them to take up rifle shooting. In the 1930s he established a women’s section of the University Rifle Club and in 1950 they caused quite a stir at Bisley by being having the first female in an Inter-Services XX team. Some of these women would undoubtedly have been chemists as chemistry and rifle shooting seemed to go hand in hand at Nottingham for several decades.
The picture shows Brian with the women’s section of the University of Nottingham Rifle Club in 1950.
