I worked out the design and stitched it on 31st January 2020 when I was feeling deeply upset at the prospect of losing part of my citizenship that night, and all that went with it. It drew many more likes, loves and comments than any previous posts.
The element of course predates the European Union, being discovered in 1901 by Eugène-Antole Demarçay. The flag was originally designed for the Council of Europe and then adopted by the European Union. Europium compounds are used as an anti-forgery feature of Euro banknotes as they glow red under UV light.
