And here we go…

And here we go… a new periodic table, exactly the same canvas and dimensions as the blackwork but this time in all the glorious colour that the elements create. This time we will have colours of the elements themselves, colours of their compounds, colours when they are in a discharge tube, characteristic spectral lines and colours of flame tests. There is a distinct pattern for each of these categories, and one for those elements where we have no knowledge of their colour at all – these will be stitched in the same ivory colour as the canvas.

First up is the distinctive lemon yellow of sulfur – the brimstone of biblical description and of belching volcanic vents. A colour that gives its name to the brimstone butterfly and also the lesser known brimstone moth. This chequerboard pattern is the one I will use for colours of elements themselves.
