Brian Shaw was present at the visit of King George V and Queen Mary. At this ceremony in the Market Square they opened the new Ilkeston County Secondary School where he was a pupil. They apparently pressed a button which opened the school gates some 800 yards away. An explosive charge conveyed the success of the opening to the listening crowds – this surely would have delighted Brian.
[addition – if you look closely you can see two of the white posts have rope wound up them. The gentleman just to the left of the left-hand of these posts looks like Sam Shaw Jnr]
